Summary:
If you’re looking for Common Core aligned activities (especially for grades 1 & 2 but skills still relevant to other age groups!) with short passages and fables, then this paid subscriber resource might be for you. Otherwise, free subscribers have access to the resource links!
Resources:
Part 1 of Reading & Writing about Crows (nonfiction)
ReadWorks — You’ll need to create an account (free).
Once you have, you should be able to access “All Kinds of Birds” (linked below). OR, search for “A Smart Bird,” which is an article under the overall heading of “All Kinds of Birds.”
You should also be able to access “Crows Are Smart” by Peggy Lindsey.
And “The Fox and the Crow” (comes with questions if you’d like them).
If the ReadWorks articles do not work, here are other articles and texts about crows:
Britannica Kids article on crows— one paragraph about their intelligence, but you don’t have to focus only on intelligence!
Audubon article about crows — if you just want something about their intelligence, you could stick with #4.
The Fox and the Crow — this fable actually makes the crow seem less intelligent, so it would be good to compare/contrast the portrayal of the crow in this fable. If you’d like a video version, here’s this one from the Fable Cottage.
The Crow and the Pitcher — definitely portrays crows as intelligent.
